Global Perspective Spotlight: Researching cuisine, culture in Thailand’s four food regions, with Mark Finamore ’25 and Alaina Shields ’25
For their Global Perspective summer, Mark Finamore ’25 and Alaina Shields ’25 traveled throughout Thailand’s four food regions: the Central Plains, the North, Northeast, and the South. The two scholars are conducting ethnographic research on the country’s cuisine.
“Food is at the heart of Thai culture and can be found around every street corner, and down every alleyway, at all hours of the day,” Mark said.
“I’ve been especially fascinated by the complexity of flavors and diversity of cuisine across the four intertwining yet uniquely distinct food regions. Alaina and I are lucky to learn from the local communities who have been so willing and excited to teach us about their country and culture.”
